Welcome to the world of design where light isn’t merely an illuminating factor but an essential element that breathes life into the soul of a space. At Outside In Studio, I champion the transformative power of natural light within interior design, and in this post, we delve into why it's not just a feature but an absolute necessity.
The ethos of our design philosophy at Outside In Studio revolves around creating spaces that harmonise with the natural environment, and nothing achieves this better than the strategic incorporation of natural light.
“Natural light transcends the boundaries of mere functionality; it influences emotions, enhances well-being, and elevates the aesthetics of a space."
When it comes to infusing interiors with natural light, the choice of windows plays a pivotal role. That's why we entrusted NorDan windows to bring our vision to life in our recent Hill House holiday home project. Renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and commitment to sustainability, NorDan windows seamlessly merge functionality with elegance. Their high-quality materials and innovative designs allow for maximum light infiltration, while also providing excellent insulation—a crucial aspect in energy-efficient design.
Let's explore why natural light is indispensable in interior design:
Enhancing Mood and Well-being
Natural light has a profound impact on our mood and overall well-being. Exposure to natural light helps regulate our circadian rhythms, contributing to better sleep patterns and increased productivity. It’s no surprise that rooms flooded with natural light feel more inviting, fostering a sense of comfort and tranquillity.
Creating Visual Comfort and Ambiance
Lighting sets the tone and ambiance of a space. Natural light’s dynamic qualities create ever-changing patterns and shadows, adding depth and character to interiors. It accentuates architectural details, textures, and colours, thereby enhancing visual interest. Hill House (featured above), demonstrates how natural light plays a huge part in the interior design. The Master Bedroom benefits from the morning sunrise, where as the dining room is flooded with the evening sunlight through the large triangular window.
Optimising Space and Functionality
Natural light has the remarkable ability to make spaces appear larger and more open. It can transform the perception of a room's dimensions, making it more versatile for various functions. Incorporating ample natural light allows for multifunctional spaces that adapt to different needs. Where altering windows in existing properties isn't possible the addition of skylights can dramatically increase the amount of light. Skylights allow 70% more light to enter a space than a standard window. The project Strawberry Hill shows the impact of skylights well.
At Outside In Studio, we believe that each design choice should align not only with aesthetic appeal but also with functionality and its surrounding environment. Our collaboration with NorDan windows reflects this ideology, as we strive to bring the outside world into Hill House seamlessly and elegantly.
In conclusion, the incorporation of natural light through strategic window placements is fundamental to allow light to flow into the interior space. It's about embracing the brilliance of nature and letting it shape the interiors we inhabit.
